BREAKTHROUGH for PROSTATE CANCER?

How great that you have come by again! I so appreciate your comments and if you find the post to your liking; would you please share it with others? Thanks so much for making the world a better place!

Breakthrough for Prostate Cancer?

MEN ..If you don’t know what your prostate is or what it does, you’re certainly not alone: most men don’t. But you really should.

What Is the Prostate?

Technically, it’s part of a man’s sex organs. It’s a small gland, about the size of a walnut, that surrounds your urethra, a tube that takes urine from the bladder to the penis. The urethra also carries semen during ejaculation. The prostate gland grows quite a lot during puberty and then doesn’t change much until about age 40, when it slowly begins growing again and, in many men, doesn’t stop. Half of men aren’t bothered by their growing prostate. But the others will develop one of three prostate diseases; enlarged prostate, prostate cancer, or prostatitis, or may have more than one. More than 30 million men suffer from prostate conditions that negatively affect their quality of life.

Over 50% of men in their 60s and as many as 90% in their 70s or older have symptoms of an enlarged prostate (BPH).

Prostatitis is an issue for men of all ages and affects 35% of men aged 50 and older.

Each year over 230,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 30,000 will die of it.
From DrBrownstein.

Sometimes, I feel like we are living in the movie, Alice in Wonderland, where up is down and down is up.

The article in USA Today (4.30.2010) is titled, “Breakthrough cancer therapy is a go-for $93K.” Last week, the FDA approved the first vaccine to treat prostate cancer. The vaccine is named Provenge and costs (hold your breath) $93,000 for a series of three shots. You would think with all the media headlines, this new therapy for advanced prostate cancer is a real step forward for treating this awful illness. Unfortunately, the only one to really benefit from this drug will be Big Pharma as it is estimated that Provengewill bring in $1.5 billion dollars per year for Big Pharma.

Now, for that much money, you would assume that this new drug must cure (or at least prevent ) prostate cancer. Unfortunately, it neither prevents nor cures prostate cancer. If it doesn’t prevent or cure prostate cancer, then you might assume this expensive drug would act to put advanced prostate cancer into remission and significantly improve the life span of prostate cancer patients—right? Wrong.

What does Provenge do? Patients with advanced prostate cancer who received Provenge were found to live an average of four months longer as compared to patients who did not have the vaccine. In other words, those that received the vaccine lived an average of 26 months and those without the vaccine lived an average of 22 months. Furthermore, Provenge was associated with serious adverse effects including an increased risk of stroke.

The principal investigator claimed ”It’s significant for prostate cancer patients.” Hogwash. I say four extra months—at a cost of $23,000/month—is an obscene utilization of our health care dollars. For that amount of money, you can certainly do a lot of nutritional support including Vitamin C IV’s. Although I don’t have any studies to say that Vitamin C IV’s will out-perform this vaccine, at least the Vitamin C IV’s has very little side effects and I have seen many patients improve with these nutritional IV’s.

What can you do? Prostate cancer, as similar to breast cancer, is occurring at epidemic rates. I believe these endocrine cancers are occurring in such large numbers due to hormonal and nutritional imbalances. True progress in cancer research must focus on prevention. A holistic treatment plan that emphasizes eating a healthy diet, detoxification as well as well as hormonal and nutrient optimization is where we need to focus our resources. The first step you can take is to get the refined foods out of your diet and eliminate animal products tainted with hormones, antibiotics and pesticides. More information about this approach can be found in my book, The Guide to Healthy Eating, by Dr. Brownstein.

We have already wasted our treasures and lost too many lives searching for the magic bullet treatment for cancer.

SOY MAY BE RISKY FOR YOU…

Thanks for stopping by to share a few moments! I always appreciate your comments and if you like what you read; would you mind sharing this info with others…for their health? Take care.

————————————————————–

Soy May Be Risky for You

Manufactured soy is linked to decreased fertility and possible thyroid problems.

Long-term consumption of soy protein may weaken fertility in males, a new animal study suggests. Compared to mice fed soy-free diets, those consuming soy protein had 25% lower sperm counts.

Consuming soy in the early years may decrease fertility in females. Researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences recently linked genistein—a phytoestrogen in soy eaten from birth—with irregular menstrual cycles as well as ovulation and fertility problems in adult female mice.

Even “brief exposure to genistein can produce long-lasting effects in rats,” says biologist Heather Patisaul, PhD, at the NC State University. Why worry about toxic chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA) and not soy, she asks. “We see far more significant effects with soy than we do with bisphenol A.” A recent Korean study suggests that dietary exposure to soy phytoestrogens (like genistein) “poses a relatively higher health risk for humans” than do synthetic endocrine disrupters.

Dr. Ann Louise Gittleman’s Take:

Finally researchers are getting onboard with my “unjoy of soy” bandwagon. I’ve been worried about the proliferation of soy “frankenfoods” for decades. First and foremost, soy is a relative newcomer to the human diet. Most soybeans grown in this country are genetically engineered—and these bioengineered foods have never been tested on humans.

While many people are highly sensitive or even allergic to dairy and grains (introduced about 10,000 years ago), soy foods are relative newcomers to the human diet—only about 200 to 300 years old—making them hard to assimilate even when they’re completely natural! In Asia, where soy is part of the traditional diet, it’s processed very differently, often fermented to make it easier to digest.

Swiss researchers at the University of Geneva Medical School even caution against feeding soy-based formula to infants, because of the potential long-term risk from phytoestrogens. Soy protein isolate—a manufactured form of soy—is the main ingredient in soy formula, which comprises one-third of the U.S. market, as well as soymilk and other soy foods.

Even after undergoing the high-temperature, high-pressure industrial processes used to make soy formula and milk, phytates and trypsin inhibitors remain, interfering with nutrient absorption. To make matters worse, some processing of soy produces lysinealine, a carcinogen that further reduces the already low cysteine content of soy.

A Mixed Message—at Best
Several recent studies even link soy consumption with breast cancer, although its phytoestrogens have been touted as a natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy in women. Premenopausal women do show lower estrogen levels when they take soy isoflavones, but pro-estrogenic effects have also been reported in breast tissue. In cell research, healthy breast cells from women who took soy isoflavones showed an increased proliferation rate, which may increase the risk for breast cancer.

While some years back manufacturers pushed for and obtained the right to publish a claim that soy foods may contribute to heart health, a year-long study of soy protein at Florida State University found no cardiovascular benefits in postmenopausal women who are at increased risk for heart problems. No wonder the FDA is revaluating the soy protein claim.

Soy has also been linked to reduced thyroid function in a preliminary trial of its isoflavones among healthy Japanese. Infants with congenital hypothyroidism (sluggish thyroid) should definitely not be given soy—in formula or milk.

The Right Copper-Zinc Balance
The phytates in soy interfere with mineral absorption—particularly zinc, which is a critical component of 90 important enzymes in the body and the mineral antagonist to copper. Soy is an incomplete protein, notoriously deficient in the sulfur-bearing aminos (lysine and methionine). To add insult to injury, soy products are also very high in copper, further throwing off a healthy zinc/copper ratio.

Too much copper can suppress thyroid function as well as the liver’s ability to detoxify. That’s not all! Copper overload can lead to depression, fatigue, food cravings, frontal headaches, and weight gain.

Although I find zinc to be deficient in most Americans these days, vegetarians and vegans tend to be particularly low in zinc which makes it even more crucial for them to avoid most soy-based products.

CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicates that 1-year soy protein supplementation did not confer cardiovascular benefits, in terms of favorable alterations in the lipid profile, in this cohort of postmenopausal women. These findings, as well as those from other studies, lend credence to the decision of the Food and Drug Administration to re-evaluate the soy protein health claim issued a decade ago.

As I work with patients in balancing their hormones and you are welcome to write to me, if you have hormonal concerns…I want to conclude this post with a comment: Dr. John R. Lee in his book “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer” addressed the Soy issue in the chapter “Don’t Go Over Board on Soy”. Soy is a strong estrogenic and we do not use it in our products, nor program…

HOW THE NLP MIRROR CAN MOVE YOU AHEAD

As always, I am so happy to have you come by for a visit! If you like what you read; please, FB share and tweet! Thanks so much and I look forward to our next visit! Take care.

—————————————————————–

Did you know that you very naturally do “The NLP Mirror?” Have you ever noticed that when you are hanging out with your best friend, you tend to act and sound very much alike? It has been noted that when you are copying another person’s body language and using their words and voice tone…your relationship is strengthened.

WHAT IS NLP?

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) was developed jointly by Richard Bandler and John Grinder under the tutelage of Gregory Bateson (a renowned anthropologist, social scientist, linguist and cyberneticist), at the University of California, Santa Cruz, during the 1970s.
The acronym NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. The “Neuro” relates to our thought processes, which activate the neurological system. The “Linguistic” refers to how we communicate with others, especially through language and how it can influence our experiences. And finally, “Programming” relates to our patterns of behavior and our emotions, which we use to learn, evaluate information, deal with problems, make decisions, and ultimately achieve results.

NLP is essentially about learning how to think and communicate more effectively with others and create rapport.

Rapport is the foundation for any meaningful interaction between two or more people – rapport is about establishing an environment of trust and understanding, to respect and honor the other person’s world. Rapport creates the space for the person to feel listened to, and heard and it doesn’t mean that they have to agree with what the other person says or does. When you are in rapport with another person, you have the opportunity to enter their world and see things from their perspective, feel the way they do, get a better understanding of where they are coming from; and as a result, enhance the whole relationship.

When describing the way in which people experience the world, NLP focuses upon the five senses of touch, taste, sight, sound, and smell. In addition, NLP identifies three broad ways in which people make sense of experiences and filter information from their environment. They are known as:

* Visual—you focus specifically on what you see;
* Auditory—you notice the sounds around you;
* Kinaesthetic—you are particularly aware of how things feel both physically and emotionally.

These three ways of dealing with the external world are described as “representational systems” in NLP terminology. NLP identifies the link between language and the way in which we use our senses to respond to our environment and how language can reflect a preferred representational system. Observing the language that people use and identifying whether they are using visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic senses can provide you with an insight into the way that they are responding to information and to their environment. NLP teaches that by adopting the language of someone you are interacting with, you will be able to communicate your message with much greater effect.

A 1970 study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania by Dr. Ray Birdwhistle concluded that 93% of our communication transpires non-verbally and unconscious. NLP Mirroring, matching, pacing and leading skills will enable you to become “like” the other person. Anthony Robbins stated: “People who like each other tend to be like each other.”
The key to establishing rapport is an ability to enter another person’s world by assuming a similar state of mind. The first thing to do is to become more like the other person by matching and mirroring the person’s behaviors — body language, voice, words etc.

Build Rapport

Though you may find that you develop a natural rapport with some people and not others, that does not mean you cannot build rapport with everyone you meet or work with. Do know that you can develop rapport with anyone by using simple NLP methods:

* Mirror the other person. It is possible to artificially simulate rapport by consciously mirroring the other person. By observing his or her body language, choice of words, subjects of interest, as well as values and ideals, you can adapt the way in which you communicate to suit the individual you are dealing with. Mirroring should be subtle since exaggerated mimicking can actually break rapport!

* Identify what the other person’s values are in order to approach leadership in alignment with those values. Inspire people by recognizing what inspires them.

* Listen to their language and identify whether it describes what they see, what they hear, or what they feel and adapt your language and method of communication to match their preference.

* Keep yourself clear and open, so as not to make judgments about the person and stay focused on what the person is actually saying, rather than airing any negative viewpoints. As Eckhart Tolle does…”Stay in the Moment!”

* Be aware of the pace at which people like to communicate and the volume of information that they can process at any one time. Try to communicate at their speed and level of detail.

Mirroring done with integrity and respect creates positive feelings and responses…if not, then mirroring becomes mimicry and has negative consequences. To take it a step further, you then go to matching. One basic difference between mirroring and matching is timing. When the other person is talking and using hand gestures etc., you can be still and in the “Now” moment. When it is your turn to speak, you can make your comments and your point using the same, or similar gestures.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

Start with your family members and find a specific behaviour or movement to focus on and match and you might choose one behaviour per day to practice until you can build up your rapport skills.

Also remember to practice mismatching and this is great fun!….be sure to end the interaction in a state of rapport.

When I was training for my NLP Certification in Florida, we were taught to put ourselves into “State” by using words, eye movements and focus. The power of this was beyond awesome…I walked on fire, walked barefoot on a board of nails, and did a tandem sky dive!

Remember to create your rapport with The NLP MIRROR for the good of all and the sky is the limit for you!

HOW TO CLAIM YOUR ABUNDANCE

Welcome and thanks for coming by again to share a “cup of” and to learn how to claim your abundance! I would so appreciate your tweeting and sharing of this info, if you feel good about what you have experienced here! Thank-you.

Eckhart Tolle has given us words of wisdom with, “ACKNOWLEDGING THE GOOD THAT IS ALREADY IN YOUR LIFE IS THE FOUNDATION FOR ALL ABUNDANCE.”

I want to share insights and action steps from Eckhart Tolle, Jonathan Budd, and myself which will enhance your life and claim your abundance…right now….

The significance of Eckhart’s quote cannot be overlooked. It is a mantra to live by.

So often in life, as we go after more things, more money, more, more….we are coming from a place of

lack. We are negatively focusing on what we don’t have……yes, to seek something else and to seek to

change in our life is, for sure, okay; as long as lack is not the foundation for our focus to make the

change in our lives.

As we bring this around to Eckhart’s quote of acknowledging the good that is already in our life; we see

the difference in the mindset between lack…I don’t have enough, I need, and look at all this good that is

in my life.

The difference in power of the two perspectives is impossible to convey, other than your direct

experience with it.

Know that even if you get financial wealth from a lack perspective; you will not be fulfilled…you will

always be lacking something…always feeling that you don’t have enough. There will always be the chase

of one thing after another in your life and that is the paradox of coming from a place of lack.

So, how do we claim our abundance?

Until we

develop the wealth inside ourselves, we never feel like we have it, no matter what we do nor what we

get. We are always lacking something, as long as we have a perspective of lack within ourselves.

So, how do we change this all to-day; so, that we begin to see all the total abundance and amazing

beauty that is already in our life and become AWARE that it IS our life?

Well, it has to do with coming into the PRESENT MOMENT and with GROUNDING yourself

with what is; with present moment awareness.

We have to ask ourselves; what would happen if we got rid of all of our thoughts…past and

future…gone…totally gone from our minds and emotions…no pain, no lack. Also, we therefore,

wouldn’t have to worry about the future because of past pain and lack memories and emotions.

We could then, look and experience the PRESENT MOMENT with the clarity and fullness of a newborn

child. Whether it be the purple petals and fragrance of a flower or objectively seeing and feeling the

unconditional love of your family pet. The moment is perfect and you are a part of that abundance.

You are a part of this thing called, Life and there is abundance everywhere! Look up into the sky…do

you see lack? No, we see the infinite and abundance everywhere….this is our choice..this is our reality

and we are really grounded in the moment. This is your moment; this is beautiful and what I am

suggesting is that when you come from that place within yourself and you are acknowledging all of the

good that is in your life, you acknowledge how beautiful the world is, you acknowledge how beautiful

the moment is and you acknowledge the good that is going on in your life and you are present with it

and it is okay. ..THAT is what abundance is born from! You are finally accepting the moment and when

you do that, you are saying to yourself; “This is good enough, I am happy, I am content, I am

acknowledging the good that is in my life, I am in the moment, I am fulfilled just as I am, without

needing anything else….I AM FULFILLED JUST AS I AM….that is TRUE ABUNDANCE, and you are in this moment…claiming YOUR ABUNDANCE!

When you come from this place, no matter what you get in life, no matter what you experience in life, you are

ALREADY FULFILLED, you are ALREADY ABUNDANT and it so happens that when you come from that

place of fulfillment already, abundance ; it is actually easier to create physical, emotional, and financial

abundance in the external world because you are not so attached to money now and you probably think

clearer and act more powerfully, and your actions are probably more productive. There are all sorts of

good things happening as a physical byproduct of being fulfilled already and grounding ourselves in the

present moment.

If there is an area in your life that is preventing you from living the present moment, that is preventing

you from seeing the good…the good that is inherently in life and is abundantly yours for the asking…no matter where you are, no matter what

is going on; trust me, your story and the story that your mind is telling you about your life and all these

problems, whatever story the mind plays…it is not the truth and even if it is a part of the truth; it is only

a tiny part of the whole truth of life.

If there is something that is preventing you from seeing this greater truth, seeing the greater abundance

everywhere; then we have to ask ourselves…what is that past emotional thought or future thought, that

I am hanging onto that is actually clouding my vision of the moment and what am I hanging onto that is

clouding my ability to acknowledge the good that is already in my life and to see the moment for what it

is…which is an infinitely beautiful moment! Set the ego aside and let your child, that is within, come out and play in THIS MOMENT!

What if we assumed that everything the Universe sent to us was “good” for us; even if though we may not be aware of this “good” in its beginning stages?

You are here to enable the divine

purpose of the universe to unfold.

That is how important you are!

YOUR CHOLESTEROL…ARE YOU AT RISK?

HELP FOR THE HEART…From The Heart and Stroke Foundation for You!

Cholesterol is absolutely essential to life.

The human body produces about 100 -200 grams of cholesterol each day. Adequate cholesterol is needed to produce hormones and to maintain healthy nerve cells. Cholesterol is also the precursor from which the body synthesizes vitamin D.

• Most cholesterol is produced in the liver, and is carried in the bloodstream to the body’s cells by special proteins called lipoproteins.

• The two major lipoproteins are low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high lipoprotein (HDL)

• Dietary cholesterol is found in foods that come from animals. These
include meat, poultry, fish and dairy products. Foods of plant origin have no cholesterol.

HOW DO YOU GET HIGH CHOLESTEROL?

LDL is the major carrier of cholesterol in the blood. LDL is sometimes called “bad” cholesterol. HDL also carries cholesterol and is sometimes referred to as “good” cholesterol.

• When in a dense “small particle” LDL form, it deposits cholesterol in the artery walls, causing an inflammatory response and the formation of a hard, thick cholesterol plaque.

• Over time, the cholesterol plaque causes thickening of the artery walls and narrowing of the arteries. This is a disease process called
atherosclerosis.

• Both normal LDL and HDL carry cholesterol in the blood stream and
act to remove excess cholesterol.

HOW SERIOUS IS HIGH CHOLESTEROL??

One in three people in North America have shown to have cholesterol counts over 200. Most believe that lowering cholesterol levels reduces the risk of illness or death from heart disease. For anyone with heart disease, lowering cholesterol will probably lengthen their life. High
LDL cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease because the small-particle form causes damage to and narrowing of the arteries.

• When coronary arteries are narrowed by atherosclerosis, they may be
incapable of supplying enough blood and oxygen to the heart muscle
during exertion.

• Lack of oxygen (called ischaemia) to the heart muscle causes chest pain.

• There is a greater chance of a blood clot forming on the surface of the fatty deposit in the artery. This may cause complete blockage
of the artery, leading to death of heart muscle
(heart attack) in the affected area.

• Both LDL and HDL cholesterol help to remove cholesterol from the blood and in so doing may help to clear cholesterol plaque from the arteries.

HOW IS HIGH CHOLESTEROL TREATED?

Diet, weight loss, and regular exercise are the first steps to lower blood
cholesterol and prevent coronary heart disease. If you smoke, you should stop. Reducing dietary saturated fat intake is the most common means of reducing blood cholesterol. If these measures are not enough, Homeopathic remedies, Traditional Medicine, and Botanical Herbs may be recommended.

Are YOU at Risk?

The Heart and Stroke Foundation offers these guidelines on total blood
cholesterol in adults (measured in milligrams per decilitre).

Cholesterol

Desirable – less than 200 mg/dL
Borderline – 200 to 239 mg/dL
High – 240 mg/dL or greater
HDL – greater than 35 mg/dL
LDL
Desirable – less than 130 mg/dL
Borderline – 130 to 159 mg/dL
High – 160 mg/dL or greater
Triglycerides – less than 150 mg/dL

OSTEOPOROSIS…ARE YOU A VICTIM?

Women are More Likely to Develop Osteoporosis Than Men?

Many women are concerned about their bone health. Bone density loss (osteoporosis) is a serious health concern for women. It happens when the metabolic process of building bone is interrupted. Hormone imbalance can be a culprit.

Like all cells in our bodies, bone tissue breaks down and rebuilds continuously. The process works through the agency of bone-dissolvers called osteoclast cells that dissolve old bone tissue and bone-builders called osteoblast cells that stimulate new bone growth.

Yes, women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than men. This is due to several factors.

Women have less bone mass than men, tend to live longer and take in less calcium. In women, the rate of bone loss speeds up after menopause, when estrogen levels fall. Since the ovaries make estrogen, faster bone loss may also occur if both ovaries are removed by surgery.

Studies suggest that this is why estrogen dominance – a higher ratio of estrogen to progesterone than is healthy – is linked to osteoporosis. Adding bioidentical progesterone to mitigate estrogen dominance helps jump start the bone regeneration process, stimulating osteoblast cells to grow new bone tissue and increase bone density. According to Morris Noteloviz, M.D., Ph.D., author of Stand Tall: Every Woman’s Guide to Preventing and Treating Osteoporosis, no other form of HRT or dietary supplementation has had as high a level of positive response as bioidentical progesterone.

But MEN do develop osteoporosis too!

Declining progesterone and testosterone can set up an imbalance known as estrogen dominance in men. In the male body, progesterone and testosterone help rein in the negative effects of estrogen, a hormone that triggers cell growth. When their levels become too low to balance circulating estrogen, health risks rise. One of these risks is osteoporosis, loss of bone density that can lead to stooping and brittle bones.

It is important for men to be aware that they, like women, could be at risk for this disease. In fact, recent research indicates that roughly one-third of all hip fractures occur in men. (Arch Intern Med 2003) By about the age of 55, men face almost the same risk for osteoporosis as women in menopause.

Studies reveal:

* Estrogen Dominance is linked to osteoporosis since estrogen delays the breakdown of bone tissue, slowing the bone regeneration process.
* Bio- Identical Progesterone hormone replacement therapy provides long-term bone mineral density benefits.
* Iodine insufficiency has been shown to be a factor in bone loss.
* Vitamin D3 plays a significant role in maintaining calcium levels in bone.

THE PLACE TO START: EVALUATE!

· Evaluate your estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels, evaluate your Iodine Levels and your vitamin D3 levels ……. today and every year thereafter. This is the place for all men and women to start if you are concerned about osteoporosis. The tests are now readily available and allow every person to monitor their own health status in these three areas.

· Hormone rebalancing, nutritional support with essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals and herbs; weight bearing exercise and lifestyle improvements, can assist bone regeneration and slow bone loss.

ANTI AGING and HELP for YOUR HORMONES…

Many symptoms that women experience are due to a phenomenon known as estrogen dominance. Dr. John Lee first coined this term in his book, ” What your Doctor May Not Tell you about Menopause.” More recently Dr Christiane Northrup also refers to estrogen dominance in her latest book about menopause.

Although most of the current literature alludes to its effects on women of perimenopausal and menopausal years, it is useful to know that having too much estrogen and not enough of the balancing
hormone progesterone also affects girls in puberty, teens, and women in all decades of life.

Due to the effects of estrogen imitators such as pesticides, herbicides, plastics, cleaning products and the hormones that we consume in meat, milk and poultry, little girls are developing secondary sex characteristics as early as age three, in some cases. Teens are experiencing acne, PMS, painful periods and heavy bleeding and are being put on the birth control pill to regulate their cycle. Women in their teens and twenties are developing endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Many suffer from infertility. Just sit in on coffee breaks in work settings all over North America to hear about the agony of menstrual and menopausal discomfort, depression, migraines and hot flashes. Many women frequent electrolysis studios to deal with unwanted facial hair. Most wonder where their waists have gone and why they have developed large abdomens… the androgens in their bodies are also out of balance. Thyroid hormone no longer can function as nature intended. Bones deteriorate with osteoporosis…
All of these symptoms may be due to having too much estrogen and not enough progesterone. The more estrogen we have in our bodies, the less progesterone we produce.

Anyone who is on hormone replacement therapy is adding more estrogen, in synthetic form to a body that already, in most cases has too much. The side effects of this may be at least uncomfortable and
could be downright dangerous.

There is a solution to this that is easy and has to do with bowel regularity, a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables and the use of essential fatty acids. These simple interventions in addition to an exercise plan and balanced diet can bring high estrogen down. Absorbable progesterone cream, cycled correctly, can supplement to correct the balance.

We belong to a ‘quick-fix’ culture. It is important to note that simply using progesterone cream in the absence of the estrogen-lowering components of a balancing program will provide only temporary success.

Wellness involves a commitment to a life style of ‘selfconsideration’.

The avenue to success is paved with education about being tested to evaluate your hormones and then going on a hormone and nutritional program.

Finally, evaluate your hormones with a saliva test. Excessive alcohol, overdoing exercise, sleep deprivation and stress can all interfere with hormone balance. A saliva test will tell you which hormones are in balance and which are not…from there your own personalized program is set up for you…for a complimentary program, pick up your first gift on the top right and from there, we can talk about your hormonal needs.

I look forward to chatting with you!

Adrenal Exhaustion and Eastern Medicine

It is important to explain the Chinese concept of “Yin” and “Yang”.

Often referred to generally as ‘opposites’, Yin and Yang are more correctly translated as ‘cool’ and ‘warm’ respectively.

Adrenaline – the action hormone – can be thought of as similar to the effect of a herb which increases the body’s ‘yang’, its heat.

You have probably experienced a sudden rush of energy accompanied by sweating and heart palpitations is not dissimilar to someone turning up the body’s own internal heat source.

It follows therefore that if someone is suffering from adrenaline exhaustion then an infusion containing a herb belonging to the “yang” category would be welcome as going some way to redress the balance. Patients suffering from the opposite problem – too much adrenaline would benefit from the converse effect of taking a “ying” based compound.

Chinese herbs capable of stimulating or suppressing the body’s adrenal functions are called “adaptogenic” – this means that they adapt the body’s reactions.

In Chinese medicine, Adrenal Exhaustion is recognized as Kidney

Deficiency caused by poor lifestyle habits. Herbal Kidney Tonics

work to restore the proper function of the adrenals and thyroid

functions. They are often combined with adaptogenic herbs that

reduce incorrect stress reactions and increase the body’s ability to

adapt correctly to stressors. This is never a ‘quick fix’ and often

takes 6-8 months of herbal therapy, but works very effective at

addressing an issue that is often left untreated.

In his book, ” Healing with Whole Foods” Paul Pitchford explains that

the concept of the Kidneys in Chinese medicine goes beyond that

of Western physiology. In Chinese medicine adrenal gland activity

is generally assigned to the concept of the Kidneys. Both the

adrenals (in Western medicine) and the Kidneys (in Chinese

medicine) contribute to the energy, warmth, sexuality and other

aspects of the body. Also anatomically the adrenals are located

on top of the kidneys and produce secretions that make kidney

activities possible.

The Chinese medical syndrome that corresponds to decreased

adrenal function is Kidney Yang Deficiency. The clinical

manifestations of Kidney Yang Deficiency are: soreness of the

Herbs for Adrenal Fatigue

Huang Qi

1. A Chinese herbal remedy, Huang Qi is used to protect the adrenal function and regulate blood sugar levels and blood pressure.

Rhodiola
2. Rhodiola rosea is a golden root that helps relieve stress. It is an herb that may also help enhance memory and improve mental ability.

Cordyceps
3. Cordyceps is a Chinese mushroom. It is used to treat problems with circulation, lungs and the heart. This herb can strengthen adrenal glands. It can also help the body’s immune system in fighting infection.

Ashwagandha
4. Ashwagandha helps reduce stress and relieves digestive pain. This herb can help calm the body’s nerves. Chew the berries of this plant and use the root powder as a tea base.

5. Siberian ginseng has a wide range of activities that help support and rejuvenate adrenal function, increase resistance to stress, normalize metabolism and regulate neurotransmitters.

6. Ginger root helps modulate cortisol levels, normalize blood pressure and heart rate, burn fat, increase energy and metabolic rate and stimulate digestive enzyme secretions for proteins and fatty acids.

7. Licorice root is known to naturally fortify cortisone levels. It has also been used to help decrease symptoms of hypoglycemia. CAUTION: Licorice raises blood pressure so monitor your blood pressure if you have high blood pressure and avoid it altogether if it raises your blood pressure above 140/90.

Visualization and Positive Suggestion: “I am toning and revitalizing my kidneys, adrenals, and my immune strength.”

Shoulder Release
Releases tension from pressure building points on the upper part of the shoulders. Tones, expands, and stimulates the thymus.

Visualization and Positive Suggestion:
“I am squeezing out tension and building a strong defense against disease.”

MORE SUGGESTIONS
Walking, trampoline exercise, martial arts for strengthening the various organs of the body, meditation and visualization, yoga and stress management all will have a complementary beneficial effect for adrenal rejuvenation.

Rebound exercise on the mini-trampoline stimulates the lymph flow better than any other form of exercise.

Increased oxygenation that comes with all forms of exercise, and aerobics in particular, more fully feeds the oxygen-starved and sleepy brain cells. The exerciser feels more fully and pleasurable awake, alert, and aware. It is important to note not to over-exercise because that will in turn exhaust your adrenals.
Take time to smell the flowers. Put a smile on your face. Enjoy each moment. Cultivate a positive mental attitude. Negative thinking has a very profound detrimental effect on the body. Any type of stress can lead to exhaustion whether or not you have a strong or a weak constitution. Stress will eventually catch up to the most robust constitution.

Last but not least—SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE as much as possible.

ARE YOU RUNNING ON EMPTY? Part 2

ADRENAL FATIGUE – Part 2- The Western Approach

Last time, we talked about the Causes, Signs, and Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue and to-day, I want to share some thoughts on helping our million dollar adrenals…they are worth more than their weight in gold!

The best way to scan your adrenal hormone profile, and in particular your cortisol levels, is to have a saliva test.

YOU HAVE the POWER to GAIN NEW ENERGY!

1. First, eliminate SUGAR. Sugar, as with caffeine, sets your body up for an energy “drop” and then you’ll crave more sugar. Sugar ages your body. Stevia, is a healthy no-calorie sugar replacement.

2. Be in bed by 10 pm every night and do sleep in a dark room. Did you know that between 10 and 1 am, your body does the most repair for you? Be aware that even small amounts of light can disturb your sleep.

3. Avoid caffeine, as this is a fake energy and it makes your blood more acidic. It actually dehydrates you, and in the end, makes you feel more tired.

4. Cut out processed foods, as they are dead foods, devoid of nutrition, full of chemicals and they rob your body of minerals. They also are very hard on your digestive system and constipate your colon.

5. Do eat fermented foods and drinks. Kefir and probiotic liquids help you with your digestion and boost your immunity.

6. Eat good quality Ocean vegetables; as they are so essential for both the adrenal and thyroid glands. In the beginning, add a little wakame, dulse, or nori to your diet and you will begin to experience more energy.

7. Eat animal protein in the middle of the day (11 am – 2 pm) as digestion uses up a lot of energy in your body and these times are when your digestive tract is at its height. Be aware that animal protein can be very heavy and/or toxic to your system.

8. Drink water… clean, filtered water. Water is needed for every cellular function in your body. Do hydrate upon rising by drinking two glasses of water, and then drink 1 – 2 liters, slowly throughout the day. Before you eat lunch and dinner; have a glass of water about 1/2 hour before eating and this will help the digestive tract prepare for your food. Remember, your adrenals actually control your body’s hydration and when they are fatigued this affects your body’s ability to hydrate.

9. Remember to get sunshine in the morning and during the middle of the day. You need the vitamin D that your skin manufactures when it has the sun’s blessed rays! If you can have 20 – 30 minutes of early morning sun; this can help reset your internal body clock and therefore make it easier to go to bed around 10 o’clock.

10. Exercise. Done daily, this helps you get more oxygen, cleanse your blood, sleep better, and stimulates your digestive tract. Pick a couple of favourites and then you’ll stick with it!

11. Be grateful…smile and be happy and do something for someone else, every day, knowing that they are not able to pay you back. In the beginning, you may only have the energy to do something small; however, that is wonderful and that will continue to strengthen and expand, in time. Be gentle with yourself. It is SO important to take the hard stress out of your life…it may mean, taking more alone time for yourself, changing jobs, avoiding toxic people and situations, meditation or pray on a daily basis, doing breathing exercises to both eliminate tension and increase oxygen and energy for the body…whatever it takes.

SLEEPING HELPS YOUR ADRENALS

In addition to practicing the good sleep habits and protocol for sleep; we need to make sure that the glucose level is stabilized throughout the evening to avoid sleep maintenance insomnia. When your blood sugar level falls, healthy adrenals restore the levels back to normal. If the blood sugar levels are not stabilized, there will not be optimal results when attempting to correct adrenal homeostasis. Here are some dietary guidelines to stabilize your blood glucose levels:

1. Do not skip breakfast. Breakfast should be the biggest meal. You should not wake up feeling hungry, as this is a sign that your blood sugar may be low during sleep. Make sure to eat a high quality protein-based breakfast, not just bread and cereal. Eggs are excellent source of protein and unoxidized cholesterol as long as it is not over-cooked. Eggs from an organically fed chicken are best.
2. Eat every 2-3 hours during the day, if you are hypoglycemia or have a tendency to be weak and dizzy 2-3 hours after a meal but feel great immediately after a meal. Do not wait until you are hungry. However, do not eat non-stop either. Adding live foods to your diet is excellent; as is drinking green smoothies.
3. Snack only on low glycemic foods such as nuts, seeds, hard-boiled eggs, etc.for sustained energy release along with a small amount of carbohydrate such as carrot to supply instant energy to the body.
4. Whole fruit such as apple is great.
5. Never consume high glycemic fruits (foods) without a source of protein and fat to balance them. For example, you can eat a combination consisting of a whole fruit with some almond butter to balance the carbohydrate with protein and fat..
6. If you wake up in the middle of the night, have another light snack.

DEEP BREATHING TO A NEW YOU!

We often tend to be “Shallow breathers.” If you are, you will notice, see or feel your ribcage moving out, as you inhale. If that is so, then you are breathing with the muscles in between your ribs instead of with your diaphragm. This amazing muscle is at the bottom of your chest cavity and it pulls air down.

HOW TO BREATHE DEEPLY

1. Begin by lying on a mat on the floor on your back.
2. Put one hand on your upper chest and the other on your abdomen, just above your waist.
3. Breathe in slowly through your nose and you will feel your hand on your abdomen rise up.
4. Then, breathe out slowly through your mouth and that same hand will lower.
5. Repeat the steps 3 and 4 for a few times and then allow your ribcage to expand and widen as your abdomen moves out, and in this way, you are filling up your entire lungs…bottom to top.

The above deep breathing is something that you can do to relieve stress and increase your energy. It is also a good idea to take a few deep breaths, every once in awhile throughout your day and increase your oxygen intake…and increase your physical and mental well-being and how great and simple is that?!!!

SOME HELPS for YOU…

1. Yoga is wonderful for relaxing, toning your body, and it uses breathing techniques(breath control), that help with body and mind energy.
2. Meditation works with your breath, mind, and emotions. Beautiful!
3. Pilates is great for fitness and deep breathing through the diaphragm; as well, as energizing your body.
4. Aerobic exercise will cause you to be out of breath and will help you work on your lung capacity. Going for walks in nature is both soothing and energizing…you can take 4 breaths in through your nose (sniffs) and then release 4 breaths out through your mouth.

These steps can help you overcome your fatigue. Do remember, “step by step.” Please know, that you will gently take your own sweet time in allowing your body to heal itself. YOU deserve that and more!

GLANDULARS, VITAMINS/MINERALS

Adrenal Glandulars – A desiccated adrenal gland can help replace some missing adrenal hormones and if the thyroid is low functioning, desiccated thyroid glandular may be needed. A reputable brand is essential.
Pregnenolone, DHEA –These should be recommended under the guidance of a practitioner.

Herbal Teas and Mate…NOT coffee

Teas from several herbs include: lemon balm, chamomile, and a very good one is, “Sleepytime Tea.”
Mate, a tea from South America has energizing properties, without feeling jittery. Avoid stimulants such as: ephedra, guarana, caffeine, kola nut, and prescription stimulants.

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

1. Kalium phosphoricum personality is nervous, oversensitive and excitable. Everything is too much for them and when they get tired they get irritable. They have a feeling that something bad will happen to them; they startle easily. They have difficulty with concentration, and they are forgetful of words and names. There is a profound state of mental and physical exhaustion.

2. Gelsemium patients will present with slow pulse, tired feeling and mental apathy. Usually there will be muscular weakness, drowsiness and even dizziness. They are sensitive to falling barometric pressure, with many symptoms aggravated by cold and damp weather. They are lethargic, dull, and apathetic to their own complaints. They want to be left alone because any excitement, even good news, will make them feel worse physically.

3. Argentum nitricum will suit most weak and trembling patients. There is going to be periodical weakness; one day they will be well, but then, they will be overtaken by weakness. Sometimes their fatigue may become very pervasive to the point that they cannot even dress themselves. They will become irritable with a lot of anxiety, to the point that they will start crying because they feel nothing can be done to help them. This state of debility is caused by adrenal insufficiency.

4. Phosphoric acid will be suitable for a patient presenting with extreme physical exhaustion, inertia, and apathy. These people often complain about loss of hair and even change in visual acuity. Their whole pathology arises from hypo-function of the endocrine system — particularly of the adrenals.

The body needs vitamins and minerals to make adrenal hormones. A nutritional diet is the best way to get vitamins and minerals; however, most people suffering from adrenal fatigue are nutritionally deficient and are in need of supplements.

Vitamin C (2000-4000 mg. per day, sustained release

A Good Multivitamin,

Vitamin B-complex 50 mg. twice daily,

Niacin (as inositol hexaniacinate) 125 – 150 mg per day,Pantothenic acid 1200 – 1500 mg per day,

Magnesium citrate 400 – 1200 mg per day

Liquid trace minerals (chromium, molybdenum, manganese, selenium, copper, iodine)

Next time, I shall approach Adrenal Fatigue from a more Eastern approach. I studied in China and we’ll take a look at our stressed body, through Eastern eyes; as well, as what herbs and Chinese medicine has been used over the years…and I ask you, what do your Emotions have to do with Adrenal Fatigue?

Until then…..walk in nature, meditate, and Deep Breathe!

Also, if anyone does want to contact me about their fatigue and/or wants to order a Saliva test Kit; do send in your comment.

ARE YOU RUNNING ON EMPTY? – PART 1

“When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot become manifest, strength cannot be exerted, wealth becomes useless, and reason is powerless.” – Herophilus

FATIGUE – BURNOUT – and – JUST PLAIN TIREDNESS

Is this YOU?

Fatigue, exhaustion, tiredness, weariness, low energy…whatever you choose to call it, it’s a real problem and it happens to real people like you. One out of every two people are complaining of some form of Adrenal Exhaustion! Maybe your neurotransmitters are sluggish and you have difficulties with focus, or your digestion and you’re constipated, or your hormones are giving you havoc, and you have menstrual irregularities, mood swings, coldness etc. etc.

What About The Adrenal Glands?

The adrenal glands may only be approximately the size of an almond, however, they are power houses! These glands are extremely important in the body and they affect the way you think and feel. They affect how fats and carbohydrates are used, are a factor in fats and proteins being converted to energy, how stored fat is distributed, blood sugar regulation and proper cardiovascular and gastrointestinal functions.
The adrenal glands are responsible for helping the body cope with stress and survive through stress; these glands are referred to as the “glands of stress.” They allow the body to deal with stress from every possible source whether it is job related, injury, disease, relationship problems or just the stresses of everyday life in the 21st Century.

The outer adrenal cortex comprises 80 percent of the adrenal gland and is responsible for producing over 50 different types of hormones in three major classes – glucocorticoids, mineralcorticoids and androgens.

The most important glucocorticoid is cortisol. When this is lowered, the body will be unable to deal with stress. This happens in adrenal fatigue.

When our body is stressed, our cortisol level rises in an environment where the negative feedback system is dampened. While this is happening, our DHEA level continues to drop. The result is a high cortisol to DHEA ratio andas Dr. Lam states that the following occurs:

“1. Reduced insulin sensitivity, reduced glucose utilization, and increased blood sugar, which leads to diabetes.

2. Reduced secretory IgA (the main cellular defense factor), natural killer (NK) cell and T-lymphocyte activity.

This leads to increased chances of getting infections such as Herpes, yeast overgrowth, and viral infections.

3. Increased loss in bone mass, as calcium absorption is blocked. The demineralization of bone occurs, leading to osteoporosis.

4. Increased fat accumulation around the waist and protein breakdown, thus leading to muscle wasting, an inability to reduce weight.

5. Increased water and salt retention, leading to high blood pressure at first, with low blood pressure as the condition worsens.

6. Estrogen dominance, leading to PMS, uterine fibroids, and breast cancer.”

,

The adrenals are so extremely responsive to the changes in your physical, physiological. and emotional world and there are many things that can throw them out of balance. Too much physical, emotional, or physiological stress can cause your adrenal glands to produce excess hormone and therefore leave them depleted and unable to handle any further stressors in your life. The extreme of this condition may result in Addison’s disease which if not treated can be a life threatening disease.

Adrenal fatigue occurs when the activity of the adrenal glands diminishes. The less function that is going on in the adrenal glands, the more organs and systems in the body are affected. Changes occur in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism, fluid and electrolyte balance, heart and the cardiovascular system and sex drive.

What Happens to You?

When you are experiencing a stressful situation; the following may occur as your body responds from a hormonal standpoint…

- Your hypothalamus signals your pituitary gland to release ACTH.
- The ACTH will stimulate the adrenal medulla to secrete
epinephrine, and the adrenal cortex to secrete cortisol, among
other hormones.
- The cortisol level will increase and convert more stored glycogen
into blood sugar for energy. Energy is also increased from the
release of epinephrine from the adrenals.
- Your heart rate will increase (from epinephrine)
- You will perspire more (from cortisol)
- Muscle tension will increase (from cortisol and epinephrine)
- Digestion slows down as the blood is diverted away to
the stressed area.
- Rectal and bladder muscles may relax.

When the above physiological response occurs over a long duration, or in certain cases when there is acute stress, then adrenal fatigue is the result as the adrenal glands become worn out.

Stages of Adrenal Fatigue

ADRENAL FATIGUE PROGRESSION

Diseases follow a downward progression as the body deteriorates:

Stage 1: Alarm Reaction (Flight or Fight response)

In this stage, the body is alarmed by the stressors and mounts an aggressive anti-stress response to reduce stress levels.
During this period, the body needs cortisol to overcome stress, so the production of cortisol is therefore increased. After some time, the adrenals will experience difficulties in meeting the body’s ever increasing demand for cortisol.

Stage 2: Resistance Response

With chronic or severe stress, the adrenals eventually are unable to keep up with the body’s demand for cortisol. Anxiety starts to set in, and the person becomes easily irritable. Insomnia becomes more common, as it takes longer to fall asleep. There is also frequent awakenings as well. Infections can become more recurrent. PMS and menstrual irregularities surface, and symptoms suggestive of hypothyroidism (such as a sensation of feeling cold and sluggish metabolism) become evident.

Stage 3: Adrenal Exhaustion

Early in this stage, mild symptoms characteristic of the first and second stages of adrenal fatigue continue to worsen and become persistent or chronic.
Finally, as the body’s key hormones, such as cortisol, falls below the minimum required reserve for normal function and output fails, the body may down-regulate the amount needed in order to preserve what is on hand for only the most essential body functions. This near-failure state is quite serious and requires professional attention. This is a state of extreme low energy as the body tries to conserve to survive.

Stage 4: Failure

Eventually, the adrenals are totally exhausted. When adrenal fatigue has advanced to this stage, the line between it and sub-clinical and clincal Addison’s disease, also called adrenal insufficiency, can be blurry.
Typical symptoms of Addison’s Disease may start to emerge. Fatigue becomes extreme, with weight loss, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, hypoglycemia, headache, sweating, irregular menstrual cycles, depression, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances. The body appears to have lost its normal homeostasis and is breaking down. It this is not attended to, death may occur.

PART 2: Next Post… What Can You Do About Your Adrenal Fatigue?
